Today in class I thought, "I've waited 8 years to do this."
Now I'm doing it, and it's everything I've wanted it to be.

I'm applying to schools again (to see if I can get in, and to see if they'll give me a scholarship). this would be the fourth time - I think I can write a book on the application process. |

| Two-part, Part two |
[Apr. 7th, 2008|10:36 pm] |
I now think aloud here.
Friends-only posts will continue to be locked over here. This split* does seem like quite a hassle, so I guess in time it will be you choosing between reading the log full of truth and the log full of lies, and for my entertainment I won't tell you which is which. :)
*It's interesting to note that the root of Raskolnikov (the protagonist in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment) is raskol, meaning "schism" or "split". |

| Doctor, the stock photos are spreading! |
[Apr. 2nd, 2008|05:27 pm] |
We do have an acute shortage of doctors in Singapore. This morning these three doctors posed for the shoot at Novena Medical Centre, a collaboration between Tan Tock Seng, Raffles Medical and Mount Alvernia.

In the afternoon they had to rush to West Point Hospital (run by China Healthcare Group) - where they are moonlighting - for another photo shoot.

| Azmi about chapati |
[Apr. 2nd, 2008|02:51 pm] |
For many years my family bought chapati from this guy we refer to as Janggut, meaning beard in Malay. The name's not actually very helpful because everyone else working in this shop at the corner of Norris Road (off Serangoon Road) sports a janggut. Azmi Restaurant (we only found out the name recently) does have very decent chapatis, in fact about the best I've eaten so far. I've never been to India, so Azmi's soft and fragrant chapati is my benchmark.
I like my chapati, but there is a reason I don't go there to eat or request for their food very often. I don't find their other dishes particularly tantalizing. Their vegetable dishes are ok, but their meat dishes are salty, way too oily and very fatty. And if you choose a mutton dish the muttony pong might affect your appetite. The kheema is the most tolerable, but I'd rather eat my chapati with plain dhal and something that doesn't overpower the taste of the aromatic roti.

In the midst of some research I found this clinic's name quite amusing:

| Experience counts, and counts down. |
[Mar. 31st, 2008|06:04 pm] |
Because my mind tends to be the most active (hyperactive, that's why the wandering) when I'm buried under a pile of work, here's a thought:
Instead of spending millions finding cures for diseases like malaria and dengue fever, why don't we just do what humans are good at and have a track record in? We can, like we have done with so many other species, drive the pesky mosquito to extinction. The first step would be to tag some monetary value to the dead mosquito...
[update] I'm not the first to think about this. Evolutionary biologist Olivia Judson wrote about the specicide of mosquitoes in A Bug's Death. While my approach is a social one, hers is genetics-based. |

| Switcheroo, or thoughts on my recent mac conversion |
[Mar. 15th, 2008|10:03 pm] |

This isn't strictly Macintosh-related, but the first time this swaku used the slot-loading optical drive, I got a little scared, because it sounded like after it was done devouring my MS Office (I say this without irony) CD, it was going to come after my first born.
I'm not totally converted lah. But look at the sliding windows! So pretty! So fun! And everything looks good on a Mac. Who needs pr0n when you can get your jollies off your word processor? |

| questionable statistics |
[Mar. 11th, 2008|08:43 pm] |
So there was that survey done where they found 64% of NUS students have sex at least once a week.
I did not know that 36% of the NUS student population was in the school of engineering. (ha ha)
But I do know that 86.26% of NUS students got a C grade or lower for statistics. Because in stats, sample size does matter. |
